This video premiered exclusively on Ultimate Classic Rock, click here for the full story.
Presenting "Brewing Up Lite Roast" – a three-part series of videos showing behind the scenes of "Lite Roast". This is "Step Two – Brew", enjoy! Sammy Hagar is back with another installment of the exclusive behind-the-scenes look into his new album ‘Lite Roast,’ just out on Mailboat Records.
As with part one, which described coffee’s role in the new project, Hagar provides intriguing new details on what inspired him. “The whole acoustic CD thing came from sitting around, thinking ‘what do I want to do next’?” Hagar says in the video. “Everybody says, ‘we want to hear Sammy rock.’ Well, I’ve been rocking my whole life — and I’ll keep rocking my whole life. But every now and then, you just like to do something different.”
Thus, ‘Lite Roast’ was born. Recorded solely with Vic Johnson, the longtime lead guitarist from Hagar’s solo band, the just-released album includes stripped-down takes on solo favorites like ‘Eagles Fly,’ Van Halen‘s ‘Dreams,’ and ‘The Love,’ co-written by Hagar and Journey‘s Neal Schon.
“Sometimes, when you strip a song down, and you get to the essence of it,” Hagar adds, “once you do that — you realize what the song is really about. … When you go back to rocking it, you have a better understanding. I’m telling you, I learned so much from this acoustic adventure I did with Vic.”

Presenting “Brewing up Lite Roast”: Step One – Grind
Presenting "Brewing Up Lite Roast" – a three-part series of videos showing behind the scenes of "Lite Roast". This is "Step One – Grind", enjoy!
Starting with the trip to his neighborhood coffee shop that inspired the record’s title. “There’s a big coffee roaster here in Marin County called Equator,” explains Hagar at the start of the clip, which you can watch above. “They’re dear friends, and I always go get fresh coffee there. I stopped on the way to rehearsal one day and I got some to bring over there, so me and [guitarist Vic Johnson] were drinking coffee — we don’t drink rum when we’re working, except onstage.”
Looking at the inventory, Sammy made a sudden connection: “I saw these big bags of beans and I thought, ‘Wow, call this thing ‘Lite Roast.” It just came — it was just one of them crazy things. I think ‘Lite Roast’ really says it, because it’s the same beans, we just roast ‘em lighter this time.”
The rest of the video delves in to Sammy’s thought process behind the ‘Lite Roast’ project, including his memories of the all-star acoustic show that inspired him to take an unplugged trip back through his catalog. It also finds him offering fans a listening tip: “I really recommend drinking coffee with this,” he says. “I don’t own a coffee company, believe me, folks. But I think, you know, you take a big cappuccino, a double, and start sipping it and put on ‘Red Voodoo,’ the opening track, and man, you’ll be jacked up. You’ll be up dancing, and you probably won’t finish the record at that stage. You’ll go out and do something.”

Sammy Hagar sings “Birthday” for The Art of McCartney
Sammy lended his voice to the recently released compliation called "The Art of McCartney". As the name implies, this compilation showcases well-known songs from McCartney's career with tributes from many exceptionally talented artists, such as Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, the Cure, & Kiss.
Sammy contributed his voice to the 42 track collection by singing "Birthday" and says he's still a "little shocked" that he was asked to participate in the first place. On getting into the album, Sammy mentioned in a Rolling Stone interview, "I've thrown a birthday party in Cabo every year for 25 years, so I'm pretty much a birthday celebration guy. "Birthday" is a good screamer and nice fit for my voice, and the guitar riff is really nice."
Check out Sammy's version of "Birthday" in the video below, and click here to learn more about "The Art of McCartney".
The Art Of McCartney is a very special project celebrating the songs of Sir Paul McCartney. It features songs such as Maybe I’m Amazed, My, Love, The Long And Winding Road, When I’m 64, Let It Be, Helter Skelter, Eleanor Rigby, Live And Let Die and many more recorded by some of the world’s greatest artists backed by McCartney’s long time band.
The caliber of artists showing their respect to Paul’s songwriting genius on The Art of McCartney is staggering with Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, The Cure, The Who’s Roger Daltrey, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, Dr John, Yusuf, Barry Gibb, Jamie Cullum, Kiss, Chrissie Hynde, ELO legend and Beatles producer Jeff Lynne and many more recording McCartney classics exclusively for this album.
