MusiCares Person of the Year Event 2020: Honoring Aerosmith
This year’s MusiCares Person of the Year event was like a class reunion for me. A lot of the bands I started with back with Montrose were there: Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick. It seems like I knew everyone there and we damn near got all caught up in a big backstage hang!! My area was crushed between Foo Fighters to my left, Cheap Trick to my right, Gavin Degraw and Gary Clark, Jr. across the way. So many folks that all stepped up and crushed an Aerosmith song – not easy work! But everyone performed phenomenally.
Highlights for me were Gavin Degraw and all the ROCKIN' Women (of which there were many!), especially this phenomenal artist from England named YOLA, and a new country artist Ashley McBryde, who absolutely slammed "Dude Looks Like A Lady." And Melissa Etheridge, HER, Orianthi, LeAnn, Jesse J, Kesha, Emily King! Music is universal…Rock is NOT dead…and Women F’ing Rock.
My performance with Ori was so damn much fun, I hated to see it end so quick! Seemed like we were out there for 30 seconds and then it was over. (Watch it here!)
And what can I say about Aerosmith that everyone doesn’t already know. We heard two hours of great songs and saw some of the greatest singers in the business today push themselves and squeeze everything they’ve got into the vocals because Steven Tyler has made it so difficult to sing his stuff. They had to pull singers from every genre of music to cover the catalog. What a great career and they well-deserve the honor.
Most importantly, MusiCares takes care of musicians. I firsthandedly have brought two cases to them over the years and they both were taken care of! I support this organization wholeheartedly and will continue for as long as I can. What a night. I guess you could say it was an unbelievably star-studded event and everyone perform their ass off. It was an honor to be there as a performer.
