On Jan. 5, 2022, Sammy was awarded the accreditation of Honorary Ambassador of Los Cabos, Mexico. He was honored with the municipality’s first Medal of Honor during an Award Ceremony that was presided over by Secretary of Tourism, Economics and Sustainability in Baja California Sur Maribel Collins, Municipal President of Los Cabos Oscar Leggs Castro, Senator of the Mexican Republic Lucía Trasviña and Director of Tourism Donna Jeffries, at Plaza Mijares in San Jose del Cabo.

Sammy is the first recipient of the honor, which was created with the vision of distinguishing those individuals who have contributed to the development and promotion of Los Cabos and the economic growth of México in a remarkable and extraordinary way. In his role as tourism ambassador, Sammy will represent and promote the brand of Los Cabos internationally, using his influence to share and strengthen the experience of visiting and doing business in Los Cabos.

“In recognition of Mr. Hagar’s incredible commitment to Los Cabos and our new partnership, we are thrilled to honor him with this unprecedented role in championing Los Cabos as a prestigious travel and business destination,” said Leggs Castro. “Mr. Hagar has long been the unofficial ambassador to Los Cabos and through this designation we look forward to strengthening our tourism brand by leveraging his national and global appeal to promote Los Cabos throughout the world. We are thrilled that Mr. Hagar will continue to bring his incredible network of friends in music, entertainment and business to Los Cabos.”

#Flashback to 1977 at the Selland Arena in Fresno. That’s Gary Pihl in the background!

Freddie Mercury was sick and Queen canceled in Sacramento the night before this Fresno show and I was asked to headline. But Thin Lizzy said they were going to headline, so I opened the show. Needless to say, in my hometown where I had sold out the same building: we killed it. The next night in Fresno, Queen canceled again so I was asked to play Fresno as well which I did. Thin Lizzy tried to turn my monitors off and tried to get us to shorten our set. Those were the good all days of rock ‘n’ roll rivalries, ha ha pretty awesome. The only bummer is I never got to play with Queen.

It doesn’t get much better than that to close out our 1st residency run! All the years playing with Mikey, Mona, Vic and Bro came out like a wave of synchronicity. No setlist needed as we rode the jam from “Turn up The Music, to AC/DC’s “Problem Child” (a highlight of the night for me and one I haven’t played in at least 20 years) to Montrose “Make it Last”” (the second song I ever wrote in my life!) and “Be Still” a new song we performed live for the first time (minus Jason) but yes—new album coming soon!
