Paper Money

Paper Money is the second album by the band Montrose. It was released in 1974 and was the last album to feature Sammy Hagar as lead vocalist. Ronnie Montrose sang lead vocals on “We’re Going Home”.

Original bassist Bill Church left the band before this album was recorded and was replaced by Alan Fitzgerald.

Paper Money shows Montrose toning down the more metallic elements of its sound and pursuing a more commercial direction with “I Got The Fire” being the only track that matches the intensity of the debut album.

Although the liner notes for the CD edition of Paper Money said that Ronnie was offered the lead guitar slot for Mott the Hoople when he left the Edgar Winter Group, Ronnie says that this never happened and was just a rumor.

“I Got the Fire” was later covered by Iron Maiden and Axe

10X10

Sammy (and Steve Lukather) are featured on “Color Blind“, a track off of the long-awaited final album from Ronnie Montrose, 10X10. In addition, the classic two Montrose albums will also be expanded and reissued on Sammy’s birthday, October 13th.

“This song was the first one Ronnie and I ever did where he came to me with something he had the musical ideas for first. I heard it and I said, ‘Yeah, I like that one — let me work up something for that.’ I don’t know why the racial thing came up at the time — maybe there was something going on in the news. I can’t remember what pulled those lyrics out of me, but I love them a lot. They’re relevant lyrics forever. That song has a statement to it… It’s valuable to have 10×10 be seen as Ronnie’s last work, rather than going and digging up some stuff from his past. This was something he truly had a vision for.” -Sammy

Ronnie Montrose was at work on a guest-packed new studio project before his 2012 death, with a core trio rounded out by Styx bassist Ricky Phillips and Kiss drummer Eric Singer. Phillips completed work on 10X10, enlisting a group of Montrose’s friends and collaborators that includes Sammy Hagar, Glenn Hughes, Phil Collen, Tommy Shaw and Edgar Winter – the latter of whom played guitar on Montrose’s 1972 album, They Only Come Out at Night. You can hear “Color Blind,” featuring Hagar and Lukather here:

“His songs still have the fire and angst of a young rebel, but with some added wisdom and foresight voiced in his own unique language of ‘guitar-speak,’” Phillips says in a press release. “On 10X10, we hear Ronnie at the top of his game, from the opening crunch guitar of ‘Heavy Traffic,’ all the way to the closing song ‘I’m Not Lying,’ which was Ronnie’s tip of the hat to his friend Robin Trower.” You can see a complete list of collaborators below. 10X10 is due on Sept. 29, just weeks before Rhino releases deluxe editions of 1973’s Montrose and 1974’s Paper Money on Oct. 13. These double-disc reissues include newly remastered versions of the original albums, which featured Hagar on vocals, plus bonus discs of previously unreleased material. A Concert For Ronnie Montrose – A Celebration of His Life in Music @ Regency Ballroom

"A Concert For Ronnie Montrose – A Celebration of His Life In Music" will feature the original Montrose lineup (Sammy Hagar, vocals; Bill Church, bass; and Denny Carmassi, drums), performing the landmark first Montrose album, with special guest Joe Satriani on lead guitar. The original Gamma lineup (Davey Pattison, vocals; Glenn Letsch, bass; Denny Carmassi, drums) will also be on hand, with special guest Marc Bonilla on lead guitar. There will also be an All-Star band, composed of many of the great musicians that Ronnie played with over the years. Some of those confirmed artists include: Neal Schon from Journey, Steve Smith formerly from Journey, members of Tesla, Eric Martin from Mr. Big, Rickie Philips from Styx, Eric Singer from KISS, Tommy Thayer of KISS and Jimmy DeGrasso from Y & T and Alice Cooper.

Ronnie Montrose was born in San Francisco and moved with his family to Colorado when he was two, returning back to his native home when he was 19 years old. In 1969, he started a band with Bill Church called Sawbuck, but that project got sidetracked when Ronnie was hired to do studio work with Van Morrison (Tupelo Honey)Boz ScaggsEdgar WinterHerbie Hancock, and others. In 1973, he formed his own band, Montrose, who recorded two albums together.  The debut Montrose album went platinum and has been called the “first American heavy metal album.” In 1979, Ronnie formed Gamma, who recorded four albums. Ronnie continued to record through the 1980s and 1990s, and Gamma put out their fifth album in 2005.

This is from Leighsa Montrose, Ronnie’s beloved wife: “Ronnie was the kindest man I had ever met. I am honored that he was my husband and best friend as well. We slept together, we woke each morning together and we shared every meal together. We savored every moment that we had together. I am so proud of him for the man he was, which extended far beyond his musical abilities. I am full of joy to have been a part of his life, and I'm so happy that he was a part of mine. I dearly thank all of you for your friendship and love you shared with him. I know it meant everything to him. All love, Mrs. Leighsa Montrose”

Sammy Hagar stated, "One of my top priorities this year was a Montrose reunion. Ronnie and I planned to do it in Cabo in October. I am so sad it won't happen, but on April 27th, Joe Satriani, Denny Carmassi, Bill Church and I are going to play the hell out of some Montrose!!!"
